Quartz with Calcite on Matrix

DI 2-1, March 2003

Location:

Zederhaus, Lungau, Salzburg, Austria

Description:

This beautiful specimen was the first piece recovered. After opening the cleft, this piece lay in the rubble with the crystals on the underside. It blocked further access into the cleft and required extra care when being removed as it was wedged between other rocks. The green schist matrix shows a distortion that reveals the pressure that had been exerted on the cleft. Several generations of quartz crystals grow on the matrix. The smallest generation measures just a millimeter. Another generation measures about two centimeters. Between these two, individual brown, shiny calcites have grown along with, as a highlight, individual major quartz crystals. These main crystals in turn show a variety of growth patterns, including a long double terminated crystal almost 17 cm long. Several others show slim growth while two grow massively with short lateral surfaces.

Size: 29 x 13 x 14 cm
